Child shot, 2 hit by vehicle after altercation breaks out at NJ party

DEERFIELD TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- One child was shot and two others were struck by a vehicle after chaos erupted during a graduation party Friday night in Cumberland County.

The incident happened around 11:42 p.m. at a home on Elm Street in Deerfield Township.

Authorities said a verbal altercation between two people escalated, leading to a crash involving a vehicle. At some point during the incident, shots were fired.

Police said a girl was shot in the leg. Two boys were hit by a vehicle as it fled the scene. All of the victims are in stable condition and are expected to recover.

Action News has learned there were about 50 teens in attendance.

The homeowners where the party was held said they don't know the individuals involved and that the event was posted online, bringing uninvited guests.

"I heard like seven shots right at the end of the driveway and a crowd that sounded like a mob," recalled one witness.

"That don't happen around here, but it did, so you never know," added James Suggs of Deerfield Township.

Police have not shared whether any arrests in this shooting were made but say they are continuing to investigate
